IGRSM was formerly known as Malaysian Remote Sensing Society (MRSS) was formed in July, 1995. Its overall objective is to support and facilitate development of remote sensing and related technologies in the country.

Since it's existence IGRSM has embarked in several activities aimed towards further promoting the use of the technology, strengthening government-private sector interaction, encouraging more publications of R&D results and keeping members duly informed of remote sensing activities within and outside the country.

Presently IGRSM has 358 members, comprising of 5 life member (L), 219 ordinary (M), 11 corporate (C), 17 associate (A), 105 student (S) and 1 affiliated member (F).
